The Mothman

Popularized by John Keel’s 1975 book “The Mothman Prophecies”, as well as the 2002 film of the same name starring Richard Gere, the Mothman is a flying cryptid originally spotted in West Virginia in 1966.

The Mothman is described as a tall humanoid creature with a wingspan around 10 feet long and large glowing red eyes.

Sightings of the Mothman started in 1966, reaching a peak by December 1967 when the collapse of the Silver Bridge in West Virginia killed 46 people.

This lead witnesses of the Mothman to believe that the cryptid brought with it a prophecy of doom; the Mothman itself wasn’t dangerous yet acted as a harbinger of death.

This isn’t the only case of high strangeness that surrounded the Mothman’s appearance; reports of UFOs, Men in Black, and other phenomena plagued the residents of Point Pleasant in tandem with the flying cryptid.

Since its initial sighting, other witnesses have come forward around the world.

The Mothman statue sits outside of the Mothman Museum and remains a popular destination for tourists and psuedo-scientists in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

The largest amount of recent sightings has come from Chicago, Illinois.
