Pop Culture Cryptids

Of course these mythical creatures that capture the minds of cryptozoologists everywhere would find a place in our pop culture and media. Cryptids aren’t strangers to it either; plenty of movies, shows, video games, books and more feature these mysterious creatures.

Scooby-Doo consistently deals with cryptids, and they have been since the 70s!

What initially got me into cryptids was the supernatural debunking gang of Scooby-Doo! Where are You?. Throughout the series, you can see them interact (and often unmask/debunk) various cryptids.

Sometimes, especially in the movies, the gang will come across actual supernatural phenomena. They sometimes even playfully end with the cryptid actually existing, despite unmasking another troublemaker.

Apart from Scooby-Doo, cryptids exist in pop culture elsewhere as well. In video games like Fallout 76, players can even fight against cryptids (specifically the Flatwoods Monster and Mothman). In the 2004 game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, big foot makes an appearance (and makes a return in the 2013 GTA 5).

Cryptids not only make guest appearances in media, but even have their own! In Cartoon Network’s The Secret Saturdays, cryptozoologist team up with cryptids to keep the truth of their existence from leaking to the public.

The aliens in the video game The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (left) look eerily similar to the Flatwoods Monster of West Virginia (pictured right).

Beyond all of the aforementioned titles, it seems that the public’s love of cryptids is growing. More and more we see these mysterious beings show up in our fiction: from books to movies, video games to even board games. Maybe we’ll see them show up more in reality as well! An aspiring cryptozoologist can only hope.
